Something new has sprouted in Shadyside, and it happened so quickly, we almost missed it. Synthesis opened its greenery-filled doors earlier this year in a tucked-away storefront on Copeland Way (a block off of Walnut Street), and it’s already packed with what the owners call “exotic and sculptural plants with a rustic modern style” in a cozy brick-and-mortar storefront. If you’re an aspiring plant parent looking for a place to pick up a cactus that’s more elevated than a Home Depot run, this place is exactly what you’ve been waiting to see in Pittsburgh.

Measuring no more than 900 square feet, Synthesis took the tiny retail space at 813 Copeland and transformed it into the perfect plant store. The small size only adds to the appeal here, and we’re already hoping for copycats to bring more of these micro-retail spaces to life.

Light wood pegboards line the walls, displaying not only their impressive cactus selection, but also all kinds of stylish vessels for housing your new prickly friends. Whether you’re more drawn to the geometric black and white planters or the classic terra cotta pots, it feels like each of these pots and planters are made for mixing and matching throughout your home.

Shelves and tables are overflowing with unique and well-cared-for plants, but you’ll also find larger cacti that make great statement pieces for a patio or an empty corner of your apartment. Perhaps our favorite part of the whole space is the bold blue workbench that gives us major home gardening goals for our own apartment.

While plants are the name of the game here, Synthesis also stocks a curated selection of gifts and home goods from independent makers. Pair a potted plant with a roller bottle of Portland-based OLO Fragrances, a pennant from our Buffalo neighbors to the north Oxford Pennant or an enamel mug or pin from Pittsburgh’s own Lost Lust Supply for a thoughtful gift — though whether it’s a gift for a friend or for yourself is really up to you.
