For nearly one year now, Franklin & Mercer has been behind some of the most stylish menswear in Pittsburgh. The Lawrenceville shop only opened its doors this time last year, but in that short time, they’ve already made a name for themselves on the city’s short list of shops for bespoke and American-made mens clothing. In honor of the shop’s anniversary, we talked to owner Ryan Crisman about all things menswear, shopping local and his puppy, Stella — plus, what you should know about their anniversary bash.
What brand currently has you most excited?
KATO Brand has me the most excited. It’s a Japanese brand based in LA, with amazing Japanese design and fabrics that are cut and sewn in the US. We introduced this brand in March, and ever since then it has been our number one collection brand, featuring their year-round double gauze shirts, 4-way stretch selvage denim jeans and amazing seasonal chore jackets.

What’s been the most significant change from opening days?
The number and uniqueness of the brands that we stock.

What do you want all Pittsburghers to know about your store?
We carry unique brands that are not easily accessible or available anywhere else in Pittsburgh, and we offer a selection of products that focus on quality fit, fabric and make.

What’s one change on that horizon for the shop?
We will finally be opening our online shop very soon, and hopefully in time for the quickly approaching holiday shopping season.

What’s one piece of clothing you stock that all Pittsburgh men need in their closet?
Raleigh Denim Workshop’s limited edition, raw indigo selvage denim jeans. They’re individually cut and sewn by hand in Raleigh, then signed by the jeansmith that made them.

What’s your go-to spot after a long day at the store?
After a long day, my go-to is usually my home, to spend time with Stella, my 6 month old puppy… you may have seen her once or twice on our Instagram stories! If I am feeling adventurous, I always enjoy hitting up one of our many local Lawrenceville neighbors for some amazing food, craft beer or a nice cocktail.

Franklin & Mercer’s one-year anniversary event is Friday, November 15th from 5 p.m. to close. Raleigh Denim Workshop co-founder Victor Lytvinenko will be on site with a trunk show of unique items, from mens jeans and jackets to women’s denim. You can even have your jeans hemmed (for free!) by Victor on his vintage Union Special machine while you wait.

The Pita My Shawarma food truck will be out front serving up hot shawarma, and the first 25 guests will get free food truck vouchers. Sip complimentary cocktails from Kingfly Spirits while you shop and snack, and keep your eyes peeled for a few other surprises — including a giveaway that could send you home with a whole new outfit! Plus…STELLA!
