With a colorful, pastel aesthetic that brings to mind vintage Miami boutiques, Ruhling Woven is the latest addition to the slow but steady shopping scene in Upper Lawrenceville (alongside Urbanist favorites like Von Walter & Funk and City Grows). Helmed by maker Kathleen Fanto, a Pittsburgh native who recently boomeranged back after over a decade in Brooklyn and LA, the shop is the first brick-and-mortar storefront from a brand that is already well-known at makers’ markets in Pittsburgh and beyond.

Under the name Ruhling Woven (named after Kate’s grandmother, who she says is her “artsy kindred spirit”), Kate creates handmade woven necklaces, bags and wall art, as well as clay earrings in modernist shapes and prints of her own original paintings that feature a similar style. Ruhling Woven’s pieces stand out in the maker space inhabited by natural-hued, minimal stylings because of their bold color schemes and playful shapes — so much so that Kate has made the rounds for years at handmade markets and sold her pieces through wholesale at larger online retailers.

Now that she has her own home base, Kate plans to fill the former Calligramme storefront’s shelves with clothing, shoes and accessories, in addition to her handmade wares. The white cube platforms at the shop’s center already boast mustard-hued mules and tortoise print bags, while pops of Kate’s favorite lavender and dusty pink fill the clothing racks along the walls.

In addition to the vintage clothing Kate has always collected, Ruhling Woven will stock a small assortment of original accessories from new, independent designers (think handmade silver jewelry from Cincinnati-based artist Chertova in addition to Kate’s own handmade jewelry). In terms of clothes, expect to see a mish-mash of vintage denim, flowy, oversized blouses, tailored blazers in bright colors and even a few of those popcorn shirts that you loved in the ’90s — and will likely love again, once Kate helps you style one.
