THE PERFECT PAIR: SHELTER-IN-PLACE EDITION

We’re big fans of a good pairing over here – a great dish + an even better wine, a two-tiered date night, even a movie at home with fun, themed snacks.

After a month of cooking dinner at home and feeling more than a little cooped up, we decided to get creative with the incredible takeout options Pittsburgh still has available and create our own perfect pairing.

On a chilly Wednesday evening, after a WFH day we were proud of, we called in to Muddy Waters to place a takeout order of fried chicken, Southern sides and perfectly fluffy biscuits. For good measure, we also tacked on a linzer tart and to-go beer from Lorelei next door (an ideal one-two punch).

Picking everything up was a contact-free breeze, and our drive was filled with so many drool-inducing smells, we couldn’t wait to get home. Instead of just unpacking our takeout order and plopping down in front of Netflix, we decided to make an occasion of it — plating everything, pouring our beers into tall glasses, lighting a few candles and sitting down at the table to share the meal.

With so much uncertainty in the world right now, sometimes it’s just nice to celebrate the little things: a work day well done, delicious food prepared with care, and good conversation with loved ones. If you’re feeling equally stuck and in need of a little to-do, we’ve put together some other perfect pairings designed for sheltering in place.

Madeleine baked goods and a walk in the park. Our favorite East End bakery, Madeleine, is offering Tuesday pickup on a limited menu, and we think it makes the perfect day date when scheduled with your daily walk. Call in to order fresh-baked bread, soup and cookies, then hit Frick Park for a socially distant stroll, some fresh air and a bit of exercise before your at-home indulgence.

Best friend & coffee drop-off. If you and your bestie normally have a tried-and-true tradition, you can still maintain it during quarantine á la the porch drop-off. If you usually have a standing coffee date, we’d recommend KLVN coffee to-go and pastries from Mediterra (also available at KLVN!), a quick ring of the doorbell, and a wave from your car. If you

A bike ride and healthy lunch takeout from REED&CO. Whether you have your own bike or you rent one (with a major pre-ride wipe-down!) via Healthy Ride, hitting the bike trail is a great way to get outside and get active during isolation. Once you’re done, zip by REED&CO’s new takeout window for a Matcha Mylk, some  of Manduhandu’s home-made kimchi or the brand new vegan tacos to go.

Manduhandu 9oz makkimchi and kkakdugi are available for purchase @reed_and_co . For a couple dollars more, you can support one of my personal favorite local businesses and me at the same time. Please, take advantage of this available stock, as finding ingredients has been a struggle. Making to-order might not be possible this month (I'm still gonna try)! You can call ahead 412-605-0237 for window or curbside pickup. The Reed&Co full (updated) spring menu is on the website (reedandcopgh.com). Highly recommend the Spring Barley Salad shown in my story. My own updated menu will be posted this week, so keep your eyes peeled and turn on notifications. Hope everyone is staying safe and happy. ??? #manduhandu #reed_and_co #co_lab #co_mmunity #supportlocalbusinesses #kimchi #healthfoods

Netflix and Chi-cken. Okay, so let’s get real: maybe you’re not feeling creative and energized to DIY your own day of fun. Maybe you’re stressed, tired and just feeling low. Believe us: we all get it. For those weekends when you’re just ready for the WFH week to end, when the kids are driving you nuts or when the news is just really starting to get to you, call in to Bird on the Run for some therapy fried chicken, to-go rosé slushies and a night of Netflix on the couch.
